Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal with a population of 547,631 within its administrative limits on a land area of 84.8 km2. Lisbon's public transport network is extremely far-reaching and reliable. The Lisbon Metro is its main artery, connecting the city centre with the upper and eastern districts and now reaching the suburbs. Bus, funicular and tram services have been supplied by the Companhia de Carris de Ferro de Lisboa (Carris), for over a century.

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest city in Western Europe. Being continuously inhabited since ca. 1200 BC, predates other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by hundreds of years. As you walk through Lisbon you will find heritage monuments and characteristic neighbourhoods where the city first developed and can still be experienced at its most genuine level.

Gastronomy, wine, the simple act of sharing a meal or having a drink with friends are regular activities in Lisbon’s daily routine. You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, ranging from traditional and typical taverns to sophisticated and international sites. Young and innovative chefs have reinvented Portuguese cuisine, with interesting and refined ways of preparing traditional Portuguese dishes.

Summer in Lisbon is always sunny and hot and July is one of the warmest months of the year. With average temperatures varying between 18 and 28 degrees, sometimes it can get much hotter and temperatures above 30 are not uncommon. Do come prepared with sun cream to protect yourself from the sun and ensure that you drink lots of water.
